Bite Opening Blocks
Incisor blocks are custom formed pieces of acrylic
individually bonded to the lingual surfaces of at least two maxillary anterior
teeth. With the lower incisors contacting the blocks, the posterior occlusion is
opened to allow either passive or forced eruption of the molars and bicuspids.
Some indications for using the blocks include anterior deep bite malocclusions, any amount of overbite that
prevents ideal positioning of lower braces, leveling of arches prior to orthognathic surgery or functional
appliance therapy and correction of posterior crossbites.
Using a model of the patients maxillary anterior teeth,
Incisor Block Specialties constructs their blocks from a special hard acrylic
with radio-opaque marker. The patients overjet is specified by the orthodontist
so that the blocks are constructed to the proper length.
Incisor blocks can be used for patients who have braces already since only
the lingual and incisal surfaces of the incisors are needed. Incisor Block
Specialties has developed a removable incisal positioning cap which is
incorporated into their blocks. This removable cap makes insertion of the blocks
extremely easy and fast. The blocks have a low incidence of bond failure and can
be removed safely since they are constructed of acrylic and not metal.
To increase the speed of bite opening, the orthodontist can have the patient
wear posterior vertical elastics. Incisor Block Specialties claims that deep
overbites can be corrected in three to four months. Orthodontists now using
these blocks say they are amazed how something this simple has made their
treatment of dep bite malocclusions so much easier and faster.
